The cannabis you’ll be buying is lab-tested and legal, so you know you’re getting a high quality product.

You might imagine buying cannabis will be like purchasing liquor, but there will be a few differences. You won’t be able to walk into a shop and grab your favourite variety off the shelf. Your children won’t be able to enter the store with you, there can be no sampling and ID checks will happen without exception.

Before entering the store, you might want to ask the question: how do I want to feel after consuming cannabis? Relaxed and stress-free? Comfortable and focused? Euphoric, or not even slightly intoxicated?

Cannabis jargon can seem intimidating but don’t fret; our staff will speak to you in terms that are easy to understand. If you’re curious, or anything is unfamiliar, we will happily explain it for you.

If you’re new to the cannabis experience, you’ll want to avoid getting too high, and that starts by understanding the options available and choosing the right product. For example, if you’re purchasing a dried flower to smoke, you’ll want to select a variety that’s lower in THC (15 per cent or less) and higher in CBD.

As with anything, you’ll want to start low and go slowly. If you’re sampling a pre-roll for the first time, take a puff and then wait 10 minutes or so. This might seem an overly cautious approach, but you’ll need to allow time for your body to react and you’ll need to pay close attention to those reactions. This will reduce the likelihood of any undesirable side effects. For oil and capsules, the rule is the same: start with a cannabis product low in THC and proceed only when you feel you’re ready.

Edibles aren’t yet legal, but in the year to come, you might be tempted to try your hand at baking. It sounds simple, but baking cannabis edibles is a bit of an art. We would suggest you try oil-based products – adding them to your food or drink. Again, start low and go slowly. This approach will help ensure that any unpleasant surprises are minimized.

Being unfamiliar with the experience of consuming cannabis, you’ll want to sample it in the company of friends – those who will watch out for your well-being. It’s generally best to sample in a private residence as restrictions may have been put in place in other locales. If you choose to be on your own, let a friend know your plans and keep your phone nearby.
